A survey of cymbidium mosaic virus (CymMV) and odontoglossum ringspot virus (ORSV) in Cymbidium and other orchids cultured in Korea was conducted during 1992 - 1994. Of the 1,148 individual orchid plants representing 42 species of the 13 orchid genera tested, CymMV and ORSV were detected in 10.4% and 27.0%, and mixed infection of the both viruses with 3.1%, respectively. All the genera gave positive results of virus infections except for Calanthe, Cypripedium and Paphiopedilum genera. Of the Cymbidium plants tested, cultivated hybrids showed 71.3% and imported Cymbidiums, 33.5% viral infections with either CymMV or ORSV, and/or both viruses. On the other hands, Korean native Cymbidiums revealed 17.7% virus infection rates. This shows ORSV is more prevalent than CymMV in orchids in Korea, and also confirmed that the viruses are more severe in cultivated orchids than native ones.
